Jane Herbert Wilkinson Long, a pioneering and resilient woman, was born in 1798 and became one of the earliest Anglo-American settlers in Texas. When her husband, James Long, left for military service, Jane took charge of their landholdings. In 1821, she gave birth to Mary James Long, one of the first recorded Anglo-American children born in Texas. In the absence of her husband, Jane established a fort on Bolivar Peninsula, demonstrating her determination to protect her family and property. Her fort became a refuge for other settlers and a symbol of strength during tumultuous times.
