About the historical
William Barret "Buck" Travis

William Barret Travis was the commander of the Texian* forces at the Battle of the Alamo. Born in South Carolina in 1809, Travis established a successful legal career before joining the cause for Texas independence. He gained prominence for his passionate writings and speeches that rallied Texian settlers to take up arms against Mexican rule. As the commander of the Texian forces at the Alamo, Travis displayed strong leadership and unwavering determination. Despite being vastly outnumbered, he courageously led the defense of the Alamo until the very end, inspiring his men with his famous "Victory or Death" letter. William Barret Travis' legacy lives on as a symbol of Texas' fight for freedom.

*Early colonists, leaders of the Texas Revolution, and citizens of the Republic of Texas are referred to as "Texians." After annexation to the United States, "Texan" replaced "Texian."
